Arthritis & Joint Pain

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is a leading cause of joint pain in an older population. A progressive loss of cartilage between the bones leads to pain and joint stiffness. This loss of cartilage is typically due to genetics, but trauma and repetitive activity are also factors in its occurrence. Some inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis can also lead to loss of cartilage in the joint. This can occur in any joint but is most common in the knees, hips, shoulders, wrist, and CMC joint of the thumb.

Arthritic pain usually develops slowly over time and is most common in patients over 60 years of age. Symptoms usually begin very gradually with only a slight increase in pain or subtle loss of motion. Sometimes an unrelated injury in the joint can make underlying arthritis suddenly symptomatic. These symptoms tend to worsen over time especially as a person gets older. More severe arthritis can be associated with significant loss of motion as well as catching or cracking noises known as crepitus.

Other causes of joint pain can include injury, tendonitis, bursitis, fracture, or tendon injury. For all joint pain a workup from a provider is recommended to diagnose the problem and help get you back to activity as quickly as possible.
