Splinting & Casting
At Pacific Crest Orthopedics we offer comprehensive fracture care from initial diagnosis with an X-ray to treatment for the healing of the fracture. For stable fractures that don’t require surgery, splinting and casting are important modalities to immobilize limbs. Initial stabilization of a fracture is done with a splint for approximately one week depending on the fracture. Our team is professionally trained for splinting including short arm splint, ulnar gutter splint, radial gutter splint, finger splints, and lower leg splints.
Casting is done approximately one week after the fracture occurred, once the initial swelling decreases. Casting is done with fiberglass material. At Pacific Crest Orthopedics our team is trained in applying minimal, comfortable casts that stabilize the fracture but still allow patients to maintain their everyday activities. The time required to wear a cast depends on the type of fracture. Patients are followed carefully with X-rays to evaluate their progress. Once the cast has been removed, physical therapy may be required to aid in return to full strength and activity.
